What does GMPTE do?
If you don’t already know, GMPTE stands for Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive. GMPTE delivers the priorities of the Integrated Transport Authority (ITA). GMITA is the body responsible for setting local public transport policy and for deciding how money is spent supporting and improving Greater Manchester’s public transport network. Our office is right in the heart of Manchester city centre – about 30 seconds’ walk from Manchester Piccadilly rail station.
We’re all about public transport – improving what’s already there and planning for the future. Some of our key roles include providing the infrastructure and information that people need to use buses, trains and trams. You may already be familiar with one of Manchester’s iconic features – Metrolink trams – but did you know that we’re working on a £600 million expansion of the network that includes three new routes, new trams and a new look for the network?
But it’s not just trams we’re interested in. We were a key partner in the scheme to provide a third platform at Manchester Airport rail station and have plans to revitalise other bus and rail stations.
Over 236 million journeys were made by bus in Greater Manchester last year making buses the most widely used form of public transport. We’re at the forefront of providing top quality transport interchanges.
And that’s just for starters! With Greater Manchester Transport Fund allocating over £1.5 billion investment for public transport and highway schemes, this really is the right time to join GMPTE. Check www.gmpte.com to see what we’ve got planned.
As technology develops the need for accurate, immediate information about services grows with it. We’re planning real-time information systems and other advanced technology including Smart Cards to make life easier for our passengers.
What’s Manchester like?
Manchester has the biggest economy in the UK outside London and is now widely regarded as the country’s second city.
The city has undergone a renaissance in recent years thanks to massive regeneration initiatives and its profile and reputation for delivering major international events has been enhanced by the success of the 2002 Commonwealth Games and European football cup finals.
Salford’s MediaCity:UK will allow Greater Manchester to rival the world’s other new media cities with new media and creative industries offering employment opportunities to 15,500 people. It’s the future home of many of the BBC operations and some of Greater Manchester’s most original buildings, including The Lowry arts centre and the Imperial War Museum North.
Add this to Manchester’s legendary leisure facilities – including some of the best shopping and sporting experiences in the country – and there’s never been a better time to join us.
