The programme provides you with the opportunity to develop learning and experience in your chosen specialism. In addition, you will also spend time in other areas of the organisation to develop your understanding and experience of how the rest of the organisation works. Communications and Customer Services

The Directorate is made up of two broad teams – Corporate Communications and Customer Services. Collectively, these teams are responsible for managing the organisation’s reputation and its relationships with key stakeholders from passengers to politicians.

This is the Directorate that produces and displays information for passengers, manages relationships with our passengers, partners and staff, conducts media and marketing campaigns and keeps our staff informed.

It’s also responsible for administering the concessionary travel scheme, providing individual journey planning information and operating the Traveline call centre.

Transport Strategy

This Directorate is responsible for analysis and strategy development work to help set the future direction of public transport in Greater Manchester within the policies and priorities of the ITA.

This involves understanding customer and stakeholder needs and the business environment, alongside understanding and forecasting patterns of travel demand and supply and the extensive use of transport modelling tools, to identify opportunities for public transport growth.

Work to influence the strategies of other organisations at national, regional and local level is also undertaken by this Directorate as is the initial work of developing plans and projects to implement the strategies.

Finance and Corporate Services

This Directorate is responsible for the disciplines of Finance, Legal, Procurement, Audit and Assurance, Planning and Performance and Estates. The teams are focused on delivering the right result, first time, on time, and on budget, working in partnership with each other and to support other Directorates. The Directorate’s ambition is to deliver ‘best in class’ service and to respect the wishes and requirements of internal and external customers.

Human Resources (HR)

Human Resources (HR) form part of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) directorate within GMPTE. HR’s strategy is to meet future requirements, challenges and risks facing GMPTE. This forms part of a wider people strategy that fully reflects our priorities and objectives. An example of these objectives are:

  • Modernisation and continuous development of HR policies and procedures.
  • Recruitment and retention of high quality employees.
  • Continuous promotion of equality and diversity.
  • Reward strategy to support attraction and retention of high quality employees
  • Development and delivery of an effective Education, Training and Development framework
  • Effective performance management systems, processes and procedures
  • Promotion of wellbeing amongst our workforce

Bus and Rail

The objectives for this Directorate are to effectively deliver services and manage performance of the bus and rail operators for the benefit of passengers. This specifically covers improving the performance and reliability of bus and rail services, assisting and encouraging interchange and integration and, alongside Metrolink, developing and promoting community transport links.

This is the largest Directorate in the organisation comprising the following teams:

  • Operational Service Planning – this team works with the private bus operators to influence service level provision on the commercial network and pays for operators to run services to plug gaps in provision. It also manages services such as door-to-door transport, the Yellow School Bus scheme, and the Night Bus network.
  • Transport Services – this team is responsible for leading the relationships with bus operators by managing service contracts and working in partnership with them to address performance issues. The team also works closely with District Councils to secure ‘bus friendly’ traffic management schemes and alongside GMPTE’s projects team to deliver infrastructure to support strong bus performance.
  • Bus Station Operations – this team is responsible for managing the facilities and staff at 21 bus stations and 15 Travelshops across Greater Manchester.
  • Service Infrastructure – this team manages the maintenance of facilities for bus passengers and GMPTE’s operational property – including the head office building. This includes planned maintenance, repairs and refurbishments to ensure that standards remain high at all sites.
  • Rail – this team manages the contract with Northern Rail to provide local rail services which meet the specification set by the ITA. They also work closely with partners in the rail industry to influence a continuous improvement in service provision and performance.
  • Safety and Security – this team works in partnership with a wide range of stakeholders to optimise and improve the perception of safety and security across the public transport network.

Information Systems

This Directorate is involved in the delivery and implementation of innovative solutions to systems and technical services within GMPTE relating to both the management of IS projects and issues impacting on the delivery of IS services to the organisation and to the public.

Programme Management Services

Programme Management Services (PMS) is responsible for supporting the delivery and management of all programmes and projects across GMPTE. The team works to develop, and implement processes to ensure the exemplary delivery of projects to develop the public transport network as part of the ITA’s commitment to improving the social well-being, economic competitiveness and environment of Greater Manchester.

Metrolink

Metrolink is the UK’s premier light rail network operating throughout Greater Manchester. Services operate seven days a week for 364 days of the year. The Bury and Altrincham lines were the first to open in 1992 followed by the Eccles line in 2000. Passengers make around 20 million journeys on Metrolink every year.

Building work is now underway on a major expansion of the network with new routes to MediaCity in Salford Quays, Rochdale, Chorlton and Droylsden. Further expansion to East Didsbury, Ashton-under-Lyne, Rochdale town centre and Manchester Airport is also planned.

The teams in this Directorate are responsible for delivering this major programme as well as looking after day-to-day operational issues and keeping all stakeholders regularly informed of developments.
